Why Automated Shades Are So Cool

Have you heard about automated shades? It’s one of those innovations that you might not realize how useful it is until you have it in your life. Here at Details Interior Fashions, window treatments are one of our passions and automated shades and blinds are part of that. We offer automated shades from companies like Hunter Douglas and Lutron. Why would someone want automated shades, you ask? Here are a few reasons.

They can be controlled from your phone or a timer.

Having your shades automatically work with the time of day takes a piece of work off of your plate. You can program it to automatically shade out the sun in the heat of summer, while letting in the beauty of the sunset as you unwind at the end of the day. Sync it with your alarm so the sun is part of your waking routine. You can even make sure the shades are opening and closing at the right times while you are away to make it look like you’re home. You have easy control over what they are doing whether you are around or not.

Automated shades are perfect for high windows.

Do you have windows that are either hard or impossible to reach? You want to let the light in on your own terms, but getting to those blinds are quite the ordeal. That’s where the automated shades come in. Don’t let that high window compromise your privacy. With a simple button click, you are in control.

No cords make a safer situation in your kid’s rooms.

Do the hanging cords that come with shades make you nervous when it comes to your kids’ bedrooms? They are apt to play with whatever they can find, and those cords can be a danger for them as well as an easy way for the kids to damage the blinds. Automation takes that possibility of danger out of the equation.

Compatibility with Amazon Echo.

Are you fond of voice command technology like Amazon Echo? These automated shades are compatible with Amazon Echo. You can walk into the room, ask Alexa to open the shades, and let the wonders of technology do the rest. The amount of convenience is amazing.

Hunter Douglas is offering a $150 rebate for their automated shades until August 15th. That doesn’t leave much more time to take advantage of the sale, so stop in soon.

The Art In Upholstery

We live in a world that treats everything as easily disposable. Instead of embracing the history and the creativity of a piece, it can be just as easy to rehome a piece of worn furniture in the landfill. We offer you a different option, though. Instead of trashing your grandmother’s old living room set that you grew up with, why not give it a second life?

Before the times of cheap mass production, furniture was made to last. Even the highest level of craftsmanship cannot protect the fabric of furniture from the wear and tear of everyday life. When the fabric of a piece of furniture is showing its age, yet the frame is still holding strong, what is the owner to do?

That’s where we come in. In her many years of experience in world of furniture and home decor, Karen has honed her skill with upholstery. Whether you’re looking to recreate the look of a piece, or to give it an entirely new look, Karen listens to what you’re looking for, goes over the fabrics that we have that might match your vision, and gets to work. The art in reuphosltery is in the details, in which Karen is meticulous. The quality work that she supplies can exceed the first life of the furniture.

When you are left with your grandmother’s furniture, and it doesn’t fit your decor (or it’s a little worn around the edges), we come to the rescue. Not only do you save furniture with personal history and significance, you’re saving that furniture from taking up space in a landfill. It’s environmentally friendly!

We also work with our sister store, reDesign, in this process. If the wooden parts that show are in need of a facelift, Alex at reDesign can break out her collection of Chalk Paint© by Annie Sloan and bring color and paint technique into the equation. What might have been a boring chair is now something new and exciting!

We are so proud of the work that we’ve done, we’ve included photos. Check out some of the work that we’ve done.

Details: the beginning of the inspiration

Details  -  inspiring design for interior spaces

Where did the inspiration for the store come from? Well, from the full and varied experiences of Karen Matthews. That’s what makes Details the great store that it is.

In her twenties, Karen began building her expertise in furniture and design in her hometown of Toronto. Beginning as a commissioned sales person she moved from sales to visual display, eventually becoming a furniture buyer for a national department store. During this time she was travelling to markets in Canada, United States and Italy.

Subsequently she transitioned to the wholesale end of home furnishings representing over a dozen companies with a territory covering most of the province of Ontario.

After moving to New Hampshire in the late 80s, she worked for Gale River Sewing in Franconia. From seamstress to patterning to production manager, her sewing skills would become very handy later on in her window treatment and upholstery work. In 2000, after a few more small ventures, Karen began tailoring independently and was presented with a challenge by Steve Ray, who at the time owned the Deacon’s Bench. Could she transform old draperies into some cornice boards? From there, Karen became inspired to create Details Interior Fashions, which opened its doors in 2004.

All of Karen’s expertise in furniture, design, and creative sewing all coalesced perfectly. Window treatments were the primary focus and now there is so much more! Karen has an eye for design, whether it’s figuring out how to make a room flow well, what it needs in color or lighting, or how to make all the pieces work together. She loves to help to create inviting living spaces that her clients love.

Window treatments include shades, blinds, draperies, and pretty much any application on or around the windows. The goal is to find your needs and fit them with the perfect solution: create the privacy, add softness and warmth, control heat loss and/or heat gain, improve energy efficiency and comfort.

In the ‘Fabric Library’ you are sure to find the perfect fabric for your window treatment (or upholstery project). And as one might expect, it is a lending library. Isn’t the place to choose your fabric in your home? Absolutely!

Look to Details for high quality upholstered furniture from both Rowe and American Leather. This furniture is designed with the specs that you are searching for, with a wonderful array of fabrics developed for busy homes. Easy care and easily cleaned.  The frame styles are also developed for modern life and some specifically for smaller spaces. Choose one of the beautiful pieces in the store, or work with the staff and design your own custom look and feel.

Do you have some furniture that you love that needs some TLC, or perhaps an entire facelift? Reupholstery is another service done to perfection. If you want it to look entirely new, our sister store next door, reDesign, can recolor it. It’s amazing what a little bit of paint and new fabric can do for an old piece of furniture.

We go deeper than just windows and furniture, though. We carry lamps, local art, and area rugs from Company C and natural rugs from Fibreworks. The amazing colors and textures are sure to liven up any space.
